Why do coffee mugs get scratches?
Before knowing whether it’s safe to use scratched coffee mugs or not, first, you must know the causes of this unfortunate happening.
Coffee mugs can develop unwanted scratches over time and it could happen due to a variety of reasons. Let’s discuss some of the main factors for this occurrence.
Primary causes are the quality of the mug, the kind of material used in manufacturing that mug or it could simply be because of scrapes from other objects while washing that cause the scratches.

Should you use the scratched mug?
If the scratches are on the outer surface of the mug and don’t go inside of it, then it is safe to still use that cup because as long as there are no deep cuts inside the mug you should not worry about swallowing bacteria unknowingly.
When your cup has deep cuts on the inside, it can cause bacteria and other nasty organisms to get stuck inside those cuts. That is a problem any coffee lover would want to avoid.
Sometimes what looks like scratches could possibly be just an illusion so I would suggest you wash your mug to check if the scratch still remains. If it does, then it means it is permanent.
Problems with using scratched coffee mugs
If your mug is chipped, scratched, it can possibly attract harmful bacteria to it, and the fragmented pieces can be chipped into your coffee because of the coffee’s hot temperature.
If you do not pay heed to the little details of your mug then I would suggest you check it regularly to find any scratches as they can lead to some serious long-term issues.

Do you put your fingers in the ring of your cup? Or do you hold it with both hands from the center of the mug?
Whichever one you choose, it is not the correct way to hold your coffee mug.
You should put your index finger in the ring holder and clutch the remaining three fingers, and the thumb should be on the ring of the cup.
You can stick out your pinky finger to make it look even more elegant, but if you are in a hurry to gulp down your coffee then don’t open the pinky finger.
It is as simple as that and can make a big difference when you are with someone or in public.
